Last week we took a journey into the realm of Folk music. This week we are going to venture into the genre of Bluegrass and.........

Union Station is one of my favorite bands. I love Bluegrass and Allison Krauss. Union Station has another member named Jerry Douglas. Jerry is one of if not the best Dobro players in the world. To me, a Dobro is kind of a steel guitar that's played similar to a regular guitar but placed face up to allow for the movements necessary to play it.

This piece of music is a great one to demonstrate the connection between the Dobro and a Chineese instrument called a Guquin. Pay close attention to Jerry's solo in the beginning, especially starting at :45. Notice his hand movements running up and down the strings. Notice his picking hand and how he manipulates the strings. Then sound of the instrument and style of music.

Now here is the Guquin. If you watch and listen you will see the common thread.

Please feel free to let me know what you think about this comparison and if you enjoyed Guquin. Drop me an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

As always, thank you for taking the time to join me on another musical rabbit hole.
